The Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) Program is now accepting applications for Spring and Summer 2017. The MHIRT Program is a research experience where students learn to conduct research during the spring semester and then conduct an 8-week research project on health and health disparities in Thailand or Cameroon during the summer.

The Program benefits include:
• Quality experience in research
• Summer stipend of $1000/month for 3 months
• Roundtrip airfare and all other travel expenses
• Paid living expenses abroad
• Life changing research and cultural experience
• Enrolled in Directed Research courses (up to 10 credits)

Applicants must be: 1) a US citizen or permanent resident, 2) from an under-represented minority background (which includes Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, Filipinos, Hispanic Americans/Latinos, African Americans/Blacks, American Indians and Alaska Natives), 3) from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background or 4) from rural areas.

Examples of Dr. Su's current projects include development of novel fusion protein domains using protein engineering, synthetic biology, and cell-based high-throughput screening to enable highly efficient gene and trait stacking, innovative bioprocessing to enrich oleaginous yeast biomass with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids for aquaculture feed, new photobioreactor design to improve microalgal biomass production, biotechnological applications of unique surfactant proteins, innovative electrochemical conversion of agricultural wastes, and fusion protein technology to produce self-assembled synthetic enzyme complexes, fluorescent sensor proteins, and biofunctional nanoparticles. Several technologies developed in my laboratory have been patented, including a newly awarded patent on a novel engineered protein that enables precise control of gene and trait stacking in genetically modified organisms (US patent 8,945,876). Dr. Wei Wen Su's research group focuses on Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology. Our research goal is to solve real-world problems to help heal, fuel, and feed the world using biotechnology. Specifically, we used a combination of modern molecular biology and process engineering tools to develop innovative enabling technologies that advance our ability to tackle challenges facing production of pharmaceutical proteins as well as bio-based products such as industrial enzymes, and engineering new traits into crop plants and other organisms. Many past and on-going projects in my laboratory involve innovative process engineering inspired applied molecular biology research. We have extensive research experience in protein and enzyme engineering, transgenic plant biotechnology, bioprocess and bioreactor engineering, and recombinant microbial fermentation engineering.
