The connection between denim and sexual assault awareness began with a 1992 ruling by the Italian Supreme Court. An 18-year-old girl was r***d by her driving instructor, but the court overturned the conviction, arguing that because she wore tight jeans, she must have helped him remove them—thereby implying consent.

The next day, women in the Italian Parliament arrived wearing jeans in solidarity. This sparked Denim Day, a global movement to protest “victim-blaming” and the damaging myths surrounding sexual violence.

The story of denim is not just a fashion statement; it is a narrative of resilience, a visual protest, and a bridge to the core values of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. When we wear denim to bring awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault, we aren’t just putting on a fabric—we are donning armor in a fight for justice that dates back decades.
