On Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 4pm-6pm, walk through over 250 research posters spanning two floors of the MD Anderson Library. This is the largest undergraduate research event at UH and showcases research from students of all disciplines. Come join, learn, and celebrate the vibrant research culture at UH!

Congratulations to Brandon Than for receiving the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious award that supports students pursuing a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering!

Brandon, a junior honors student majoring in biology and Spring 2025 PURS recipient, is the 14th UH student to ever receive the scholarship. "I cannot think of a more deserving candidate for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. He is an incredible example of what is possible at the University of Houston," said Dr. Ben Rayder on Brandon's success.

A lunch discussion on his journey in academia, a hands-on paleography workshop, and a public lecture on his new book, The Mosquito Confederation. All students, faculty and staff are invited.

Dr. Debbie Harwell, a piller at The Honors College at the University of Houston😍

A pillar of the Department of History is Dr. Debbie Harwell (PhD '12), managing editor/editor of the Center for Public History’s Houston History and Instructional Associate Professor with a research specialty in women in the American South. Her book Wednesday in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change, Freedom Summer 1964 won the 2015 SAWH Julia Cherry Spruill prize for the best book in southern women’s history. She was appointed to the Harris County Historical Commission in 2024 for a two-year term and works frequently with local historical organizations and collections to bring history to the public.

Playwright Nicole Burton purchased the rights to Harwell’s monograph Wednesdays in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change: Freedom Summer 1964 (University Press of Mississippi, 2014) for a play. The play was produced in November 2023 in Mt. Ranier, Maryland. At one performance, Harwell took part in a panel discussion with one of the 1964 participants, Susan Goodwillie Steadman, whom she had interviewed for the book, and moderator Kean Koppen. The play and panel were held on November 18, 2023 in Mt. Ranier, Maryland, November 18, 2023. We celebrate Dr. Harwell's many contributions to
