PJHC The Program in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities (PJHC), housed in the Center for the Study o

The PJHC minor combines high-caliber undergraduate courses with internship experiences for students to work in the summer or as part of a study abroad program with agencies that help disadvantaged communities and people. The students are placed with organizations where they work directly with clients and gain experiential knowledge that broadens their perspective on human lives and capabilities. T

hrough these academic and experiential learning opportunities, students explore a deeper understanding of the structural factors underlying poverty and human well-being and potential policy solutions. Furthermore, the program aims to promote dialogue among all disciplines about how to address issues of poverty alleviation and human well-being with a sophisticated understanding of the challenges and sound strategies for moving forward. Although impediments to human well-being take many forms, barriers to the capabilities of women and girls persist across societies; women and girls are therefore disproportionately represented among the poor and those unable to attain their full capabilities. Acknowledging gender inequality as a powerful influence on disparities in human well-being, the academic component of the program, including the content of core and required courses, recognizes gender as a central analytic category.

From her services on the Rice University Diversity Council to her involvement as BLM (Black Lives Matter) and AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon Coordinator in 2020 and 2021, her efforts have improved diversity, equity, and inclusion both on campus and off.

We love to see what our PJHC students go on to do after they graduate, so we were so happy to read about Michelle Tran (Class of 2018) and her groundbreaking work with Soar Over Hate in the The New Yorker!

Soar Over Hate is an initiative devoted to gathering resources for the community in the face of escalating anti-Asian violence. What began as a modest GoFundMe page to raise two thousand dollars has, in the time since, become an energetic nonprofit, with more than three hundred volunteers who have collectively equipped tens of thousands of Asian Americans across New York and California with self-defense devices.

At a self-defense class in New York after the latest anti-Asian attack, one student said, “I feel like I have an army of sisters.”
