Researchers in Rice's Department of Bioengineering, with the support of the Rice Biotech Launch Pad, have developed a cytokine factory patch designed to accelerate healing. The bandage, researchers say, can more effectively engage the body’s natural healing response.

Watch out for Naomi and Joshua Alade, a pair of fist-throwing, feet-slapping siblings as they take on Rice! They hope to add to their podium count by taking on the LA Summer Olympics as Owls in 2028. While balancing athletics and academics, Naomi and Joshua are also devoted to civic service and the performing arts. They’ve led an athlete-driven scholarship as well as starred in theater productions and African dance showcases. Even among their impressive achievements, these two are known to be grounded, reflective and compassionate. Representing team USA, they’ve traveled all over the world and are excited to bring those experiences, as well as masterfully-made banana bread, to our residential colleges!

Lydia and Rebecca’s work demonstrates what becomes possible when we connect fundamental science with engineering, technology and medicine — when we bring the right people and ideas together around a problem rather than allowing the boundaries between disciplines to define how we approach it. That kind of collaboration is increasingly essential to solving the problems that matter most, and it is precisely the kind of work we want Rice to be known for.

What a wonderful story about Rice doctoral student Sean Terada Yang, whose remarkable talent at the piano is matched by an equally inspiring sense of purpose.

Sean came to music through a path that also included neuroscience and medicine, and his experiences playing live music for patients in intensive care helped shape his belief that music, like medicine, has the power to heal, connect and improve our lives.

Now, as a student at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music, he is sharing that gift on a national stage as a 2026 Young Artist in Residence with Performance Today.

I love seeing our students bring together different disciplines, interests and talents in ways that create something entirely their own. Congratulations, Sean!

Chabad at Rice broke ground this weekend on a new, larger Jewish Student Center, marking an exciting next chapter for Jewish life on our campus. The center will be a welcoming home where students can celebrate their traditions, explore their faith and heritage, ask difficult questions, and know they are understood and supported. It will be a space where students can walk through the doors knowing they belong — whether they are deeply connected to Jewish tradition, exploring their heritage for the first time or simply interested in learning from others. I look forward to seeing the community, conversation and connection this new center will foster for generations of Rice students.
