We offer our congratulations to spring 2024 MA in Art History graduate Lillian Michel, who defended a thesis entitled “A la música: The Musical Abstract Paintings of Kazuya Sakai, 1964-1979.” During her time in our program, Lillian conducted thesis research at museum archives in Mexico City and in Austin, interned with the Houston Center for Photography, and worked for the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the MFAH. Lillian says, “It was such a privilege to be part of UH’s program and have opportunities to learn from and work with supportive faculty, museum staff, artists, and other members of Houston’s incredible arts community.” We are all so proud of your scholarship Lillian! 👏📚💥

We are delighted to jumpstart the fall semester by celebrating the accomplishments of our most recent graduates! First up we give kudos to Elliot Penn, who successfully defended a thesis entitled "Crossing Lines: The Printmaking of José Clemente Orozco." Elliot recounts: "During my time as a graduate student at the University of Houston, I was exposed to countless new art historical subjects and genres. In addition to fundamental theory and European art history courses, I took classes on Latin American, Pre-Columbian, and contemporary conceptual art. Due to the high caliber of instruction and the enthusiasm of the faculty, I quickly fell in love with Mexican and Brazilian modernism. I wrote my thesis on the printmaking of José Clemente Orozco, from his first cartoon to his last intaglio, and held internship positions at Public Art at the University of Houston Systems (PAUHS) and at the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA @ MFAH). I also curated a show at the University of Houston entitled Affinities: José Clemente Orozco and El Taller de Gráfica Popular during my second year. I am now serving as a curatorial fellow in prints and drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston." Congratulations Elliot!! 🥳🤩😎

Alum Anna Smith returns to Houston and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston to present her research on the Menil Collection’s Surrealist Wunderkammer installation at the annual conference of International Society for the Study of Surrealism. Anna’s paper developed out of her research in Professor Zalman’s Museums and the Problem of Display seminar. Anna is now a PhD student at UT Austin! Bravo Anna!!

Tomorrow at 11:30, we welcome Dr. Abigail Susik to campus for a conversation about her current research on AfroSurrealism in Professor Zalman's Surrealism and its Legacies class. Dr. Susik is a noted expert on Surrealism and the author of "Surrealist Sabotage and the War on Work" (Manchester, 2021), as well as co-editor of several volumes on multiple aspects of Surrealistic practice. The University of Houston School of Art invites applications to its Masters of Art in Art History degree University of Houston Graduate Program in Art History. We offer a low-cost, high reward art history degree in one of the nation’s largest and most diverse cities. Our students receive a rigorous grounding in the discipline that prepares them for a multitude of positions in the art world and/or advanced study in doctoral programs. In addition to scholarships, MA students are supported with instructional assistant positions and paid internships at area museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Menil Collection, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Blaffer Art Museum, UH Public Art Collection, and the arts and literary journal Gulf Coast. Priority application deadline is January 15, 2024.
