UH alumnus Abdias Samuel Sapon was a shy student who struggled with public speaking until he participated in a paid internship program designed to train Hispanic nutrition educators. Professor Norma Olvera led the project. “She believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself,” Sapon said.

Now, up to 50 more students of color will get the chance to learn from Olvera and collaborators in a similar internship program thanks to a $500,000 grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. “It’s an excellent opportunity,” Olvera said. A first-generation college student, Meggan Gittens understands how difficult navigating university can be. She became an academic adviser to help other struggling students find internships, get involved on campus and successfully graduate. “It’s not over until it’s 100% over,” Gittens tells her students. “There’re always ways to work hard for what you really want.” Learn more: https://www.uh.edu/education/features/mgittens/
