The International Sociological Association (ISA) deeply mourns the tragic passing of Michael Burawoy, a leading sociologist, Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley, and the 17th President of ISA (2010–2014). Michael was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident on February 3rd. His loss is immeasurable.

A pre-eminent scholar, researcher, teacher, mentor, advocate, and friend, Michael Burawoy dedicated his life to sociology. As ISA President, he championed public sociology, fostering dialogue across disciplines and borders. His boundless energy, commitment to justice, and unwavering belief in sociology’s power to transform the world will continue to inspire us. His leadership and passion shaped ISA and left a lasting impact on the global sociological community.

We will always remember his guidance, generosity, and unique enthusiasm.

🕊 Rest in power, Michael.

We are deeply saddened to learn of one of our Sociology colleagues who did so much for UH as founder of the Center of Mexican American Studies. His work changed lives of students and our community. Rest in peace—knowing you made a huge difference for good in our world 💗

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Tatcho Mindiola Jr., a leader whose vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the University of Houston, the CMALS community, and all who were fortunate enough to know and work with him. His leadership inspired us to strive for excellence and to believe in the power of unity and purpose. Dr. Mindiola’s legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the mission he so passionately championed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable life.
