University of Houston School Psychology Program

University of Houston School Psychology Program The UH School Psychology program is committed to developing school psychologists who excel in the areas of applied research and evidence-based practice.

Accredited by the American Psychological Association and approved by the national Association of School Psychologists, the Ph.D. Program in School Psychology is committed to developing school psychologists who excel in the areas of applied research as well as ecologically and developmentally sensitive evidence-based practice. Sensitivity to diversity issues and client preferences is addressed in s

pecific course work and embedded throughout the training experience. The program adheres to a scientist-practitioner training model, and students learn to conceptualize according to according to an ecological-behavioral theoretical model. Our goal is to develop professional school psychologists who are competent to engage in applied research and ecologically sensitive evidence-based practice (i.e., students learn to apply critical analysis and inquiry to identify, select, implement, and evaluate evidence-based practices with sensitivity to cultural and linguistic considerations, and in consideration of diverse client preferences). Awareness of diversity issues is ensured because UH is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse research institutions in the nation, and because our practicum sites in the Houston area mirror this diversity. Our doctoral students have consistently reflected this diversity as well, with almost one-half of students claiming non-Caucasian ancestry. We actively encourage student and faculty applicants from diverse backgrounds.

As a program, we stand with NASP and TASP in advocating for the protection, privacy, and safety of our transgender and gender diverse students.

In light of recent legislative efforts and executive actions in states across the country that seek to discourage, criminalize, and endanger transgender and gender diverse students, as well as those threatening parents and educators who attempt to support and protect students' privacy and safety. NASP affirms our long-standing position on necessary policies and practices to support the safety and well-being of all students, including those who are transgender and gender diverse.

We are excited to share the important research Dr. Gonzalez and his students have been doing throughout the pandemic. “Our findings are really important because it exposes a digital divide,” Gonzalez said. “We’re in for a lot of catching up in learning for these students in communities that may not have the resources to fully support children and families.”

When schools turned to online learning amid COVID-19, a lack of internet and digital devices put Latino students in rural areas at a disadvantage academically, according to a new study by University of Houston College of Education Professor Jorge Gonzalez. Gonzalez and his student research team foun...

After careful consideration, we have decided to implement a soft opening of classes, similar to the fall 2021 semester, for the first two weeks of the spring semester (Jan. 18-30).

Our campus and offices, particularly student-facing services, will remain open. Residence halls are open and new residents will move in as planned.

Classes will start as scheduled, however, professors may change the format during the first two weeks.
