This is a call for proposals to represent the Early Math Interest Forum as a presenter at the 2025 NAEYC Annual Conference (November 19-22, in Orlando, FL)

Each year, EMIF leadership can select two proposals submitted by EMIF members to represent the interest forum at the NAEYC Annual meeting. This submission and selection process is separate from the blind review done through the regular proposal submission process. All EMIF members are invited to submit a proposal to represent the EMIF at the annual conference, and we hope many of you will also submit proposals directly to NAEYC. We want to see a good showing of math at the conference!

If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please reach out to Dr. Carrie Cutler at the University of Houston College of Education to receive guidelines for the proposal process.

Is your child bored during summer breaks and the holidays? Clinical Associate Professors Carrie Cutler and Anne Katz, who teach students how to teach math and reading respectively, suggest cost-saving ways to keep children entertained and informed.

“No matter what trail your family stories follow or where your household’s current interests lead, there are activities that can stretch the imaginations of young thinkers,” said Katz. “With a little inspiration, a family can share activities that cost little or nothing yet have the power to keep children’s minds in motion.”

New research on video games may ease parents’ worry! Associate Professor Jie Zhang and her research team found no meaningful association between fifth graders’ video game playing and their cognitive ability. “Our studies turned up no such links, regardless of how long the children played and what types of games they chose,” said Zhang, whose study was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and published in the Journal of Media Psychology.
