This week, the HCU Alumni Association is pausing to reflect on God's faithfulness to Houston Christian University through the life, leadership, and ministry of Dr. Robert B. Sloan, Jr.
It is with profound sadness that we share our grief following the sudden passing of our beloved University President. While our hearts are heavy with loss, we take comfort in the promise of Scripture that "we do not grieve as those who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Our hope rests in Christ, and it is in that hope that we celebrate a life well-lived with purpose, conviction, and unwavering faith.
For two decades, Dr. Sloan faithfully guided HCU with a visionary spirit and steadfast commitment to Christian higher education. Thousands of alumni experienced firsthand the transformational impact of his leadership during their time as students. Others β alumni and colleagues - witnessed the remarkable growth and strengthening of the University through his leadership and his guiding vision embodied in The Ten Pillars.
Yet beyond his accomplishments as a visionary leader, teacher, and president, Dr. Sloan will be remembered most for the character he displayed every day. He was a devoted husband to Sue for 56 years, a loving father, grandfather, mentor, and faithful servant of Christ. His greatest legacy is not found in buildings, programs, or accomplishments, but in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
As we mourn his passing, we also invite you to celebrate his extraordinary life and the enduring impact he has had on Houston Christian University. We encourage our HCU community to share memories, stories, and tributes as we honor a man whose vision and leadership helped shape the HCU we know today. A link to do so will be available in the comments.
Please join us in praying for Sue Sloan and the entire Sloan family. Pray that they would experience the Lord's comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead, and that they would be surrounded by His presence and the love of the HCU community.
May we honor Dr. Sloan's memory by continuing to live out the faith, purpose, and commitment to Christ that he so faithfully exemplified.
Blessings,
