Rice University Department of Mathematics

Rice University Department of Mathematics Mathematics is the study of structure. It provides a language and tools for interpreting our world.

We are proud of the fact that Math was one of the original departments dating from Rice's first academic year in 1912. Of the 9 faculty listed in the 1912-13 Rice Institute General Announcements, 3 were mathematicians including Edgar Odell Lovett, the Institute's 1st President.

The Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University has launched the Center for Nanoscale Imaging Sciences to improve the capture, analysis and interpretation of images at the nanometer scale. The center will push the frontiers of nanoscale imaging, contributing to breakthroughs in fields such as nanotechnology, materials science, biology and biomedicine. It is with great sadness the Rice Math Department shares the news that Michael Boshernitzan, long time Professor of Mathematics, passed away on August 28, 2019 in Houston, Texas.
Prof. Boshernitzan completed his B.S.(1972), Physics & Mathematics, at the Moscow State University, Moscow, USSR, M.A. (1974) Mathematics Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, and received his Ph.D. (1981) at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.
Prof. Boshernitzan came to Rice in 1982 and throughout the last 32 years he was responsible for the selection and coaching the Rice team (and all interested students) for the Putnam mathematical competition. He was a valued and beloved part of our community and will be sorely missed.

In the percussion practice room at Shepherd, Sophia Zorek taps out a few notes on the marimba, its tones resonating from the wooden bars in soft, precise patterns. Zorek says she immediately fell in love with percussion in middle school.

Student Spotlight: Jack Petok, graduate student in Rice University Department of Mathematics

To Jack, numbers like π and i are pieces of a mathematical puzzle waiting to be put together. Jack deals with many different number systems, equations, and potential solutions. The intersection of these has been allowing Jack to work on some problems related to the centuries-old study of polynomial equations.

“I think about how to find rational number solutions to polynomial equations in many variables. I am particularly interested in how geometry affects the behavior of these solutions if they exist, or explains the lack of any solutions. A good part of my research right now relates to how the geometry of polynomial equations over the complex numbers informs the geometry over the rational numbers”

To relate complex numbers, rational solutions, and polynomial equation, Jack uses “the modern tools of number theory and algebraic geometry. Powerfully, the theory makes sense not just over the real numbers, but over the complex numbers and rational numbers as well.”

It is Jack's love of math that has led him to delve deeper and deeper into research. For his love of math, Jack credits the great teachers he has had who got him interested in solving difficult problems for their own sake. “The classes I enjoyed most in my undergraduate years were those with significant geometric and algebraic components, so once I got to grad school I gravitated towards research areas involving those subjects.”

Although Jack enjoys solving difficult math problems, he admits that it can be “very easy to get stuck for months working on a difficult problem by yourself.” To get unstuck, you get help from others. “I love the collaboration-friendly math environment here. Our department has a culture of helping each other out, mathematically and otherwise.”

In his free time, Jack enjoys choral music, cooking, and has recently picked up baking bread. After graduation, Jack hopes to get a postdoc position where he can continue his research in algebraic and arithmetic geometry.

If you run into Jack, feel free to talk to him about math and ask him for a recommendation on mathematics books!

Students from two projects of the Rice Geometry Lab gave a poster presentation to showcase what they have done during the Spring semester.
Dr. Roy and Dr. Li directed teams of undergraduate students on the projects: 'Music and Geometry’, and 'Understanding the works by Nash on isometric embeddings'. Graduate students, Yikai Chen and Xian Dai, helped the teams with their projects.
