You will be incredibly missed 🕊️✨

Limmie graced the Moores Opera House stage just over a year ago in an unforgettable concert production of Turandot. His powerful voice filled space with both strength and beauty, and his rendering of “Nessun dorma” soared - ringing with brilliance, passion and a triumphant hope that stays with you long after the final note.

Thank you for sharing your gift with us, Limmie. 💕

This all-Bach harpsichord recital will feature Matthew Dirst, Professor and Head of Musicology at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. An authority on the music of J. S. Bach and Artistic Director of the period instrument ensemble Ars Lyrica Houston, Dirst is widely admired for his stylish performances at the keyboard and on the podium. His most recent solo recording, of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 (Acis), has been acclaimed by critics, with one reviewer noting that his playing “sounds like great conducting…the musicians are his own fingers…his command of the ‘big picture’ is terrific for repeated listening” (American Record Guide). Dirst’s recordings with Ars Lyrica include several modern world premieres, including Johann Adolph Hasse’s 1725 serenata Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Opera.

On May 1 at Rienzi, Dirst will play his own German-style harpsichord by John Phillips (2020), whose elaborate decoration was inspired by Dresden marquetry from the early eighteenth century. The program will comprise music in various genres from different periods in Bach’s life: an early toccata in the Italian style, a French-style suite, and several preludes and fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2.
