Death is one of life's few certainties. But other than usual conversations on funeral arrangements and memorial services, many other topics relevant to death — such as family grief support, navigating complex health systems, or having full autonomy over end-of-life decisions — fall to the wayside.

Clinical Assistant Professor Yvonne Mendoza, LMSW, is charting ways to make those topics easier for individuals, families, and communities. Her personal experiences with death and loss spurred her to join a course on how to become an advocate for dying individuals — better known as a death doula.

The training gave her insight, not only on how to become an effective death doula, but also to envision how the training can aid interdisciplinary health teams to work together and ease the process of dying. For Yvonne, the opportunity for both social work students and future health practitioners to become better caretakers is limitless.

"Can we create spaces where families are prepared instead of overwhelmed?" she asks. "Where interdisciplinary teams work together to preserve dignity rather than simply manage illness?"
