On this day in 1951, our university made a historic shift.
The name was officially changed from Texas State University for Negroes to Texas Southern University - a change sparked by the powerful voices of students who petitioned the Texas Legislature to remove the phrase “for Negroes.”
This historic milestone reflects the courage, leadership, and advocacy of students whose voices helped shape the future of our university.
Today, we honor their legacy and the enduring spirit of progress that continues to define Texas Southern University.
