On this day in 1951, our university made a historic shift.

The name was officially changed from Texas State University for Negroes to Texas Southern University - a change sparked by the powerful voices of students who petitioned the Texas Legislature to remove the phrase “for Negroes.”

This historic milestone reflects the courage, leadership, and advocacy of students whose voices helped shape the future of our university.

Today, we honor their legacy and the enduring spirit of progress that continues to define Texas Southern University.

On this Memorial Day, Texas Southern University honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. 🇺🇸

Service demands a level of selflessness and strength that we deeply respect, and Texas Southern University honors those qualities today and every day.

In observance of the holiday, campus is closed in remembrance of those who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms.

Class of 2026, you set the bar.

This graduation season marked our highest-raising year since the Philanthropy Cord initiative began, with over 130 graduates choosing to give back before crossing the stage. Your generosity speaks volumes about the legacy you're building.

Congratulations, graduates.

TSU Art alumnus Robert Pruitt ('00) was the creative force behind showstopping look at the 2026 Met Gala.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion and co-chair of this year's "Costume Art" gala wore a custom Swarovski crystal mesh gown, over 4,000 crystals, that brought Pruitt's 2022 work Venus Williams, Double Portrait to life on the carpet.

Commissioned by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the original drawing pairs a young Venus with an older, regal version of herself wearing the Wimbledon trophy as a necklace, a detail faithfully recreated for the gala in plated silver and diamonds.

We're honored to welcome alumnus Shaun Mayo '08 as the guest speaker for our 2026 Spring Commencement Pinning Ceremony!

Shaun serves as Chief People Officer for the Arizona Cardinals Football Club, leading human resources and DEI initiatives for one of the NFL's most iconic franchises. His career is a masterclass in growth, from leadership roles at JCPenney, Kohl's, and Macy's, to senior HR positions at Amazon and Walmart, and now the Cardinals.

A proud graduate of Texas Southern University (B.B.A.) and the University of Houston–Clear Lake (MBA, Human Resources), Shaun is an SPHR-certified leader with executive education credentials from Wharton, Harvard Business School, and Stanford GSB.

His journey is one of perseverance, purpose, and people, and we can't wait for our graduates to hear from him as they step into their next chapter.

On Friday, April 24, our College of Science, Engineering & Technology alumni and 1927 Giving Society members stepped inside Texas Southern University at Houston Spaceport, our newest Aviation Facility at Ellington Field, for an exclusive first look at what’s next. ✈️

The 20,000-square-foot hangar serves as a satellite campus for our Aviation Program, housing a fleet of 12 Cirrus SR20 aircraft, 4,500 square feet of classroom and office space, and an 8,000-gallon fuel tank that brings new efficiency and independence to our operations. Made possible through an investment from the City of Houston and a powerful partnership with the Houston Airport System, this facility positions our students to train, learn, and lead in the very environments where their careers will take off, alongside industry partners like United, Southwest, and Delta.

To every alum, donor, and supporter who joined us a day before the official ribbon cutting, thank you for your presence, and your unwavering commitment to ensuring that we continue to soar.
