What an incredible Square One 2026!

Yesterday, we welcomed nearly 250 students, faculty, staff, industry professionals, and guests, our largest Square One attendance ever! It was exciting to see so much energy in the room as we kicked off another year of learning, connection, and growth for our Houston City College Interior Design students.

A very special thank you to our keynote speaker, Kimberly Littleton, such an inspiring and meaningful message. Kimberly shared so much wisdom, encouragement, and perspective with our students. One of the best moments for me came afterward, when several students approached me to say how inspired they felt and that it seemed as though Kimberly was speaking directly to them. That is the kind of impact we hope these experiences can have.

We are also incredibly grateful for the continued support of our professional organizations ASID, IDS, NKBA, and NEWH. Your presence, encouragement, mentorship, and ongoing connection to our students play such an important role in bridging education and the design profession.

And thank you to our wonderful Interior Design faculty and staff who attended, supported the event, connected with students, and continue to invest so much in their success.

Square One is about more than beginning a semester. It is about reminding our students that they are becoming part of a much larger design community and that there are faculty, professionals, organizations, and fellow students ready to support them along the way.

We are so excited to continue this journey with them. Here’s to a great year ahead!

We are excited to share that, thanks to an HCC Foundation Grant, our SEED (Studio Experience for Emerging Designers) program was able to send HCC faculty, staff, and students to FAB26, the International Fab Lab Conference in Boston!

This incredible opportunity allowed our faculty and staff to participate in inspiring seminars and hands-on workshops while also having the privilege of watching our talented HCC students present their work on an international stage.

Even more exciting, 2026 marks a major milestone for SEED. What began as an Interior Design initiative is expanding into a cross-disciplinary program that will now serve HCC's broader Art and Design community. Faculty from Interior Design, Fashion Merchandising, Digital Communication, and Studio Arts will begin incorporating SEED-based coursework, creating even more opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and experiential learning. HCC students presentating at MIT!

FAB26 is the annual International Fab Lab Conference, bringing together makers, educators, engineers, artists, and industry leaders from around the world. With the conference returning to the United States for the first time in more than a decade, the 2026 Boston event provided a rare and invaluable opportunity for HCC to connect with the global maker movement and bring new ideas back to our students.

A heartfelt thank you to the HCC Foundation for investing in our students, faculty, and the future of design education. Your support is helping us prepare the next generation of creative professionals through innovation, collaboration, and real-world experiences.

And a shout out to Shasta Beveridge for writing and submitting the grant proposal which allowed for this awesome opportunity.
