"Growing up in Huntington, Marshall University was always home, but I never realized how much it would shape my future. I knew I wanted to work in sports, even if I didn’t yet know what that path looked like. What I found at Marshall was the foundation to build a meaningful career.

As an undergraduate intern in the football video department, I gained a behind‑the‑scenes understanding of what it takes to support a Division I program. That experience led to a graduate assistant position with the Big Green Scholarship Foundation while I pursued my Master of Science in Sport Administration. During that time, the program broadened my view of the sports industry and showed me the many ways you can make an impact through college athletics.

The hands‑on experience was invaluable, but the relationships are what stayed with me. The connections I built with classmates, professors, and colleagues continue to shape my journey, and many of us now serve in leadership roles across the industry.

Marshall didn’t just prepare me for a career; it prepared me to make an impact in the place I love most. My family is here, my heart is here, and I will always bleed green! Go Herd!"

On Monday, President Brad D. Smith was officially initiated into Marshall University’s chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, a meaningful moment for both the fraternity and the Lewis College of Business.

As the world’s largest professional business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi is built on the principles of brotherhood, leadership, service, and professionalism. For generations, it has equipped students with opportunities to grow as ethical leaders, expand their professional networks, and develop the skills necessary to succeed in today’s business environment.

"Coming from London, Ohio, Marshall University was the only school I applied to out of high school. I knew I wanted to work in sports, I just didn’t yet know what that truly meant. What I found at Marshall was the framework to build a career with purpose.

As an undergraduate football equipment manager, I was given a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a Division I program. That experience propelled me into a graduate assistant role in the ticket office while pursuing my Master of Science in Sport Administration. It was during that time that the program truly opened my eyes to the vastness of the sports industry. I began to understand the many avenues available, from operations to revenue generation to student-athlete development, and the real impact you can make through college athletics.

The program expanded my perspective beyond simply “working in sports.” It helped me see how college athletics influences student-athletes, energizes fans, and shapes entire communities and regions. That understanding has stayed with me throughout my career.

While the knowledge and hands-on experience were invaluable, the relationships are what I value most. The friendships and professional connections formed during my time at Marshall continue to shape my journey. Many of my classmates now serve in leadership roles across the sports industry, and there is a special pride in knowing we share the same foundation.

Marshall didn’t just prepare me for a job in sports; it prepared me to make an impact. Go Herd!"

Accounting Students Join Faculty at State Capitol to Support CPA Legislation

Marshall University accounting students joined Professors Amanda Thompson-Abbott and Amanda Meadows for CPA Day @ the Capitol on Wednesday, January 21, to advocate for legislation that would expand and strengthen pathways to the CPA profession. The legislation, supported by the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (WVSCPA), aims to improve access and flexibility for future accounting professionals entering the field. The visit provided students with a hands-on experiential learning opportunity, allowing them to engage directly in the legislative process while gaining insight into how public policy shapes the accounting profession and their future careers.

The Senate version of the bill, Senate Bill 532, passed unanimously (34–0) and has advanced to the House Finance Committee, while the House companion bill, House Bill 4088, is expected to be considered by the House Government Organization Committee in the coming week. Faculty emphasized that experiences like this help students connect classroom learning to real-world professional advocacy and understand the broader role accountants play in business and public service.
