💚"There's going to come a point in your life when you'll have a job that tailors to your strengths, not your weaknesses." 💚

In this HELP alumni spotlight interview, Matt Skeens shares a conversation he had with retired HELP staff member, Nancy McCormick, nearly 20 years ago, and how those words have stayed with him ever since.

The HELP Program is built on relationships, encouragement, and the belief that every student has unique strengths and potential. Sometimes, a simple conversation can make a lasting impact.

As we prepare for our 🎪 Big Top Tailgate Fundraiser on September 12, stories like Matt's remind us why we do what we do. Your support helps us continue providing the guidance, encouragement, and resources that help students succeed both in college and beyond.

HELP Program scholarships make success possible for our Marshall University students!

Consider giving to our upcoming fundraiser to support students like Madison Kincaid, a first-generation student who wants to make her family proud.

Here is her story: "Last year, I failed CHM 205. Around that time, my parents and I learned about the HELP Program. I applied, was accepted, and met my wonderful tutor, who pushed me to the finish line. My tutors helped me remember things in ways I can’t even explain. I went from being a student who struggled and failed CHM 205 with an F in my first semester, to a student who passed with an A in the spring. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the HELP Program and my tutors.

My goals at Marshall are to earn my nursing degree and make my family proud as a first‑generation college student. I chose nursing because, as a kid, I was hospitalized often due to being immunocompromised. The nurses made a lasting impact on me — from watching cartoons in my room to simply making me smile. They inspired me to give back because nurses help people when they’re at their lowest. They help them feel better and remind them they’re not alone.

Because of the scholarships I’ve received, my goal of earning my degree is now within reach. I have a strong support system — a second family — behind me, encouraging me and pushing me to the finish line. Their generosity makes it possible for students like me to get the help we need to reach our full potential. These scholarships also ease the burden on families who can’t afford the program, which is incredible because HELP does truly life‑changing work."
