BIG NEWS for you weekend reading!

Dr. Kletzer just published his chapter entitled “Burning Coal to Conserve Copper: Locomotive Technology and Resource Constraints in China, 1952-78” in Revolutionary Natures: New Environmental Histories of China’s Mao Era (1949-1976) edited by Micah Muscolino.

According to the University of Washington Press, "this volume offers a groundbreaking reassessment of the environmental history of Mao-era China, a period often reduced to a story of unchecked ecological devastation. Bringing together leading voices in Chinese environmental history, Revolutionary Natures reveals a far more complex reality. Through vivid case studies, the contributors show how policies of rapid industrialization collided with material scarcity, grassroots resistance, and the unruly agency of nature itself."

Dr. Kletzer's chapter traces the development of locomotive technologies in Mao-era China (1949-1978) to understand how resource considerations influence technological and political decisions made by an industrializing state. Thus, his work illustrates the mutually constitutive interactions between nature, humans, and technology, combining environmental, technological, and social history.

A wonderful afternoon was had by all yesterday as we celebrated another semester of outstanding history interns at the Herdwork Humanities Internship Celebration!

Our students gained incredible hands-on experience through internships with the State Historic Preservation Office, the Historic Glenwood Estate, the West Virginia Community Development Hub, Huntington City Mission, the Huntington Children's Museum, Sunflower Seeds for Ukraine, and the Huntington Museum of Art.

What an incredible showcase of the many ways history connects to communities, preservation, education, and public engagement. We are so proud!
