The NBA state chairs from the Eastern Division will host a series of workshops designed to help college students prepare for their first years in the profession. These virtual presentations will run on Sundays in May with the hope of providing information that will help college students transition into successful careers in the profession.

"For WVMEA, the ongoing trials of 2020 have caused us to make decisions for 2021. Despite our desires, we have decided that the 2021 In-Service meeting will be a virtual experience. Rather than lament the lost opportunities to gather and celebrate music education, we must embrace the most significant change in 75 years of WVMEA In-Service Meetings. To make sure that the 2021 In-Service is successful and an event worthy of our membership, we are starting now on creating a new experience. Like those pioneers who hosted our first in-service, we will be working from scratch. That means some very familiar items will be adapted and other familiar items will be replaced with items that work better in a virtual world.

Some of you have spent several moments looking at the last paragraph and thinking, 'that stinks' or 'no way will this be as good as 2020.' At this point I am asking you to re-frame those thoughts into, 'ok, this will be different' and 'huh, I wonder what options this opens.' Some early positives with a virtual experience could be 1) our ability to Open Doors for more members and students by eliminating travel costs and 2) allowing members to attend a higher number of sessions based on the platform we choose. I am not suggesting that anything can replace the fellowship of a traditional In-Service, but lessons learned from hosting this conference will help us improve future in-person experiences in ways that we would never have imagined."

Keith Jackson,
WVMEA President

(Note: Please keep an eye on our social media or website. We will be releasing more details and information about the 2021 In-Service "Virtual" Conference as it becomes available.)
