Sorry for the delay on the post we were deliberating on who to feature next. This week we honor Brother Ellis Marsalis Jr. (Epsilon Lambda ‘65) Born in 1934, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. has been active in the jazz world for nearly 70 years. Brother Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of what some call the quintessential jazz music family, which includes his sons Jason Marsalis on percussion, Delfayo Marsalis on trombone, Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, and Branford Marsalis. Brother Marsalis was a music educator at several schools in the New Orleans area as well as being a recording artist releasing 20 studio recorded albums and working with notable jazz artists like Eddie Harris. Brother Marsalis was also honored by Tulane university in 2097 and received an honorary doctorate for his contribution to jazz and music education. Sadly brother Marsalis passed away on April 1, 2020 at the ripe age of 85 do to complications brought on by COVID-19. Brother Marsalis symbolizes what it’s like to be a Sinfonian and his memory drive us to achieve greatness he will be missed.
