As the first teacher preparation institute in Texas, The College of Education at Sam Houston State University (COE) continues its legacy of leadership and innovation. Today, itβs the fourth largest university-based producer of certified teachers in the state, partnering with over 80 school districts to strengthen classrooms and communities across Texas.
Home to four departments β Teaching & Learning, Educational Leadership, Counselor Education, and Library Science & Technology β the COE prepares educators, counselors, principals, librarians, superintendents, diagnosticians, and higher education leaders, and more. Its innovative programs include the competency-based Alternative Certification Program (ACP) for second-career professionals and a paid yearlong clinical teaching residency that provides hands-on experience and a livable wage. From undergraduate preparation to multiple doctoral degrees, the COE supports the future of our students in every way.
Focused on innovation, accessibility, and impact, the COE leads Texas in teacher retention, addresses workforce shortages through strong partnerships, and supports future mental health professionals through hands-on clinical training, all while continuing SHSUβs legacy as a pioneer in educator preparation and doctoral education.
Beyond the classroom, COE is home to impactful initiatives including:
- Eleanor & Charles Garrett Center on Transition & Disability Studies, supporting individuals with disabilities
- Center for Assessment, Research, and Educational Safety (CARES), advancing school safety research statewide
- Jack Staggs Counseling Clinics, providing 3,000+ hours of free counseling services each year in the Huntsville and The Woodlands service areas
- SHSU Charter School, serving 400+ students across north Houston
