At , student success doesn’t stop at the classroom door.

Through resources like the SHSU Career Success Center, Bearkats receive career guidance and professional development support at every stage of their journey. For SHSU alumnus Jason Spicer, those resources made all the difference.

After earning his degree in mass communication in 2024, Spicer turned to the Career Success Center for mock interviews and career coaching that ultimately helped him secure a full-time role as an SHSU admissions counselor serving Central Texas and the San Antonio area.

Success stories like Spicer’s highlight the impact of the Career Success Center in helping Bearkats confidently pursue their professional goals.

LEMIT - Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas at recently completed a year-and-a-half-long project for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) to better understand the evolving roles and responsibilities of newly commissioned Texas peace officers.

The research-driven job task analysis, conducted by faculty and students from the SHSU College of Criminal Justice and SHSU COBA and LEMIT, examined how modern policing has changed since the last statewide analysis in 1997. Through focus groups, interviews and statewide surveys, the team identified key themes shaping today’s law enforcement landscape while confirming many core duties remain consistent over time.

The project also provided valuable hands-on experience for SHSU researchers and students, further highlighting the university’s commitment to supporting Texas law enforcement through practical research and collaboration.

A new partnership led by the SHSU College Of Health Sciences School of Nursing is helping tackle one of Texas’ most urgent workforce challenges: the nursing shortage.

Through the Shared Nursing Academic Practice Partnership Initiative (SNAPPI), and four Houston-area hospitals are scaling an innovative teaching model designed to address a key barrier in nursing education, the shortage of nursing faculty.

Funded by a state Nursing Innovation Grant, the program allows experienced nurses to continue working in clinical settings while also training nursing students during their regular shifts. The model includes educator “boot camps” and small student cohorts that provide hands-on, real-world learning experiences.

By connecting education directly with workforce needs, SHSU continues to create innovative solutions that support students, healthcare professionals and communities across Texas. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4f0l074
