From SamPoly student to full-time paralegal. 👏

After earning her criminal justice degree from Sam Houston State University, Anna McCarthy continued her education through SamPoly’s Paralegal Studies Program and recently put that education into practice through an internship with West Houston Law Group.

The hands-on experience helped McCarthy build practical skills, from managing legal documents and communicating with clients to navigating the day-to-day expectations of a professional legal environment.

Now, that internship is turning into a career. On Sept. 1, McCarthy officially joined the West Houston Law Group as a full-time employee, building on the skills and experience she gained through SamPoly.

The Graduate & Professional School at SHSU has secured state funding to support six doctoral students through the Texas Leadership Research Scholars (TLRS) Program beginning in Fall 2026. The students selected for the program are Michelle Akinkuolie, Forrest Floyd, Raven Pigee, Christavia Willridge, Kailee Marchand and Jasmine Sierra.

Each scholar will receive a renewable scholarship of $19,884 annually for up to four years, providing valuable support as they pursue their doctoral degrees. Beyond financial assistance, TLRS scholars will participate in academic and professional development, mentoring and leadership opportunities designed to help them grow as researchers and future leaders.

For Justin Howell ’09, returning to Sam Houston State University meant more than managing a construction project; it meant helping transform a place that holds a lot of memories.

A graduate with a degree in interdisciplinary agriculture focused on animal science and wildlife ecology, Howell served as the project superintendent for the Bowers Stadium press box renovation. While his degree may not seem like an obvious path to construction, Howell says the skills and work ethic he developed at have translated directly into his career.

For the Bowers Stadium project, Howell was joined by around seven fellow SHSU alumni, along with student interns, to bring the new press box to life. For the team, the opportunity to work on such a visible piece of campus made the project especially meaningful.

Now, with the renovation complete and a new football season on the horizon, Howell and his team have helped turn the university’s vision into a space that students, faculty, alumni and fans can be proud of. And on Sept. 12, Bearkats will get their first chance to see the newly renovated press box in action as Bowers Stadium opens its doors for the first home game of the season against Tulsa.

Another record-breaking milestone for 👏

Sam Houston State University reached an unofficial enrollment record of 21,956 students as of Aug. 28, the 10th class day of the Fall 2026 semester. The milestone builds on a strong first day, when SHSU welcomed 21,776 students.

“This milestone reflects the collective commitment of people across Sam Houston State University,” said Heather Thielemann, senior vice president for Strategic Enrollment and Innovation. “Each number represents a student with goals for the future. From a student’s first inquiry through the first day of class, our faculty, staff and student leaders work together to help Bearkats feel welcomed, supported and prepared to succeed.”

Fall enrollment will become final on the 12th class day, with official, certified Fall 2026 figures to be reported later this fall. For now, we’re celebrating the momentum.

A record-breaking start to Fall 2026. 👏

Sam Houston State University has welcomed the largest first-time freshman class in university history, with 3,567 first-time freshmen enrolled as of the first day of classes on Aug. 19, an 8.7% increase over Fall 2025.

The milestone reflects SHSU’s continued efforts to expand access, strengthen connections with prospective students and showcase the academic opportunities and student experience that make Sam Houston a destination for students from across Texas and beyond.

For Eddie Blazek ’75, Sam Houston State University has been part of his story for more than 50 years. Now, he and his wife are helping shape the future of agriculture at for generations to come.

On Aug. 19, Blazek was surprised at Gibbs Ranch with the unveiling of a new sign bearing the Mound Creek Ranch name and the words “Where Genetics Matter”, celebrating a five-year partnership between Mound Creek Ranch and SHSU’s Gibbs Ranch.

Through the partnership, Mound Creek Ranch will provide at least 50 cattle embryos each year, giving Gibbs Ranch access to premier Brangus and Ultra Black genetics while helping accelerate improvements to the university’s herd. But the impact goes beyond the cattle.

Students will gain firsthand experience with advanced reproductive and genetic practices, including embryo transfer and in-vitro fertilization, while exploring new opportunities for research and hands-on learning.

For Blazek, giving back is rooted in what SHSU gave him. Now, he hopes to help give the next generation of agriculture professionals the tools to meet an evolving industry’s challenges.
