The SHSU Horse Judging Program allows students to evaluate horses as they are exhibited in halter and performance classes at various
competitive contests throughout the United States annually. While judging members spend numerous hours of preparation for upcoming contests, many important life lessons are also learned such as decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, and public speakin

g. In the spring, the judging team travels to two contests including the NACTA Horse Judging Contest held in various locations and the Spring
Sweepstakes held in Fort Worth, TX sponsored by the American Paint Horse Association. In the fall, the team travels to Columbus, OH to compete in the All American Quarter Horse Congress, then to Oklahoma City, OK for the American Quarter Horse World Show, and finally back to Oklahoma City, OK for the National Reining Horse Association Futurity. Judging horses is an excellent opportunity to not only gain more knowledge about horses, but also to meet professional horse trainers, professional judges, breed association leaders, university officials, etc. If you are interested in joining the SHSU Horse Judging Team or would like more information, please contact Lonna Holland at [email protected]
