A big thank you to the TDCJ Goree Unit for hosting this spring!

Dr. Lammers’ Advanced Livestock Production class rounded out the semester with their last production tour taking place at TDCJ’s Goree Unit. Rodney Kovar, Josh Smith, and Landi Shipper took the time out of their busy schedule during breeding season to host our class and show our students the facility, discuss day-to-day operations, inform them of their management practices and record-keeping, and answer their many questions. It was very interesting to learn the operations of this facility as well as the bloodlines and training program they have to produce high-quality horses. We want to thank these individuals and TDCJ for providing this incredible experience to our students!

Another adventure from spring semester!
Dr. Lammers’ Advanced Livestock Management class (AGRI 5350) recently stepped outside the traditional scope of livestock production to explore wildlife management during a tour of Superior Whitetails in Huntsville, TX. Students gained insight into the Texas whitetail deer industry and learned about management practices used in deer production, allowing them to compare these methods with those they have studied in the livestock industry on previous tours.

The group also toured the operation’s working facilities and had the unique opportunity to learn how to use a dart gun—skills they later put to the test in a friendly shooting competition.

We are incredibly grateful to Superior Whitetails for their hospitality and for providing such an engaging and memorable experience!

The AGRI 5350 class, Advanced Principles of Livestock Management, traveled to Oakwood, TX to tour Lipsey Beef. Lipsey Beef is owned by Bearkat Alumi, William Lipsey, where he raises, finishes, and markets his own cattle on his operation. Mr. Lipsey spent the day touring the class around his operation and educated the students on raising and finishing cattle for harvest. Additionally, Mr. Lipsey shared insights into raising and selling your own beef products as well as the economics of the beef industry and they keys to success when managing finances in agricultural production. We are very thankful for Mr. Lipsey and his family for hosting this tour and providing our students with this first-hand learning experience!

Students from the Foaling Practicum course (EQSC 3355) toured Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals - Navasota this morning. Students learned about foaling protocols at the clinic, rebreeding services, and got to see the hyperbaric chamber and learn about its many benefits. We are grateful to BVEH for the opportunity, to Ms. Bonnie Stewart for coordinating, Ms. Erika Hunter for leading the tour, and to Dr. Ben Buchanan for speaking with our students about the hyperbaric chamber!

A big thank you to Carlie (a Bearkat Freshman Agriculture major), Scott, and Pete Scarmardo for hosting our students! Dr. Lammers’ 5350 class toured Brazos Valley Livestock Commission. During this tour, Pete shared his wisdom on handling and receiving cattle, marketing calves and packer cows and bulls, and how he has seen the beef industry change and develop through his years of experience. We would like to thank the Scarmardo family for sharing their knowledge with us on this tour!
