The Sam Houston State University men’s powerlifting team competed at the 2026 Collegiate Nationals with five raw and nine equipped lifters, putting together a strong and disciplined overall performance.
In the equipped division, Adrian Avalos and Kaleb Yount each secured 4th place finishes, while Trevor D***s battled through a deep field to earn 5th place. All three showed strong ex*****on under pressure on the national stage.
In the raw division, Michael Gonzalez and Ben Nneji both placed in the top 10 in the highly competitive 75 kg and 82.5 kg classes. Both were within striking distance of the podium and All-American honors, with final deadlifts ultimately deciding their placements. Their performances reflect continued progression and competitiveness at the national level.
Ben Nneji was recognized as the team’s “Gains Master,” adding 50 kg to his total. Eric Avila earned “Mr. Dependable” honors after a perfect 9-for-9 day with PRs across all lifts.
The team also set 10 new school records.

The men’s team brought a young group with six freshmen and a strong core of returning veterans. With the foundation being set and experience building at the national level, SHSU is positioned to take a significant step forward next season. the new era is here.
