The National Jail Leadership Command Academy (NJLCA) is the result of a collaborative effort between the American Jail Association (AJA) and the Correctional Management Institute of Texas (CMIT) that takes pride in providing training for succession preparation and the development of leadership skills for successful transitioning into senior leadership positions within jails.

The Resource Training Officer (RTO) Team assisted in planning the 2027 schedule for the Juvenile Probation Officer (JPO) Basic Training program.

JPO Basic is a week-long training program that provides participants with the mandatory coursework required to be eligible for the state certification examination. At the conclusion of the training, participants sit for the certification exam as part of the certification process. Completion of JPO Basic does not guarantee appointment as a juvenile probation officer; rather, it serves as the foundational first step toward certification. To enroll in the program, participants must be employed by a local juvenile probation department.

Andy Riise of DesigntoPerform.org served as speaker during the RTO Planning Session.

The RTO team consists of the following; Julio Acevedo of El Paso Juvenile Probation, Michelle Hallock of Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation, John Milam of Nueces County Juvenile Probation, Isaac Neal of Hunt County Juvenile Probation, Dan Reeves of 1st Judicial District Juvenile Probation, Kristina Sandoval of Brazoria County Juvenile Probation, John Kinsey of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and Abe Jimenez of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Their time and commitment is greatly appreciated.

This session also welcomed two new RTO Officers; Glenn Stout of Cass County Juvenile Probation and Ana Garcia of Webb County Juvenile Probation.

Michelle Hallock was voted to receive the RTO of the Year Award.

The next RTO Planning Session will be held September 8-10, 2027

Mid-Management: Leadership for Corrections Professionals is accepting Nominations for our 2026 and 2027 programs.

To assist agencies in professional development and succession planning by preparing personnel serving in mid-management to senior level positions for greater responsibility, the Correctional Management Institute of Texas offers a five-day (36-hour) Mid-Management: Leadership for Corrections Professionals class for criminal justice professionals.

This training is designed for mid-level managers to senior level leaders from Texas juvenile and adult probation departments, adult and juvenile institutions, parole, and jail staff from Texas Sheriff’s Offices.

Mid-Management: Leadership for Corrections Professionals is not a conference or seminar whereby everyone and anyone that applies will attend. This program is limited to 30 participants. Staff must be nominated by their Director/Sheriff and nomination forms and letters of support must be submitted by the program deadlines.
