Hutchinson Community College-Livestock Judging

Hutchinson Community College-Livestock Judging Academics are a strong component of the program and our students are committed to a certain level of scholastic achievement.

The livestock judging program at Hutchinson Community College offers a unique experience giving students a chance to develop their livestock selection abilities while traveling the country to some of the industry’s elite operations. Through this rigorous learning process, students can expect to familiarize themselves with the tools it takes to visually appraise livestock and develop an understandi

ng of performance records relevant to the industry and the management of one’s personal operation. Additionally, the diverse skill set and a network of contacts established through a student’s time on this competitive team will prove to increase their marketability to potential employers upon graduation. With the quality of education and the support of the instructors, students can feel comfortable leaving HCC academically prepared for the transition into a four year university. Hutchinson Community College’s central location in Hutchinson, Kansas is ideal for a traveling judging team. We are in close proximity to some of the country’s premiere breeders, a reasonable distance from the contests attended, and minutes away from the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Introducing our new coaching hire at Hutchinson Community College!

Caleb Edens was born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma, on a purebred Hereford and commercial cow/calf operation, where he developed a strong passion for the livestock industry. He was actively involved in exhibiting cattle across Oklahoma and throughout the country; experiences that helped shape his path in livestock judging.

He continued his judging career at Butler Community College, where he was a member of the livestock judging team and earned numerous accolades, including Academic All-American honors. Caleb then went on to Oklahoma State University, where he competed on the 2023 nationally recognized livestock judging team. Most recently, he served as the assistant livestock judging coach at Butler Community College while completing his master’s degree in December.

Winter workout was a success last week, and everyone has been released for Christmas break. The team had a good showing at the Griswold Cattle Contest in Stillwater, OK, with the sophomore team placing 6th overall out of over 60 teams. Sophomore students Eric Smith and Colton Roepke finished 11th and 16th respectively as individuals, and freshman Samson McGargle finished 23rd overall out of nearly 300 junior college contestants.

We were just missing Cash Voegele for the final team photo, as he started working the Griswold sale. It’s been a great semester and we wish the students safe travels home and the opportunity to spend quality time with their loved ones. We are excited to get back at it and finish strong in the second semester.
