After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Keith returned to school to earn his master’s degree in engineering.

His engineering education has given him the opportunity to continue exploring how creativity and design can be used to create solutions that make the world a better and safer place.

Keith said the GI Bill enabled him to complete his master’s degree after his military service.

In this episode of The Vandal Theory podcast, Luke Sheneman, director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences, explains how U of I builds and supports AI infrastructure for researchers across the university.

Sheneman discusses the role of supercomputers, specialized servers, data storage, software development and data management in research, along with the generative AI and machine learning tools shaping today’s conversations about artificial intelligence.

U of I’s approach centers on AI sovereignty, maintaining university-controlled infrastructure that allows researchers and the institution to make decisions about how AI tools are used, protect data when needed, monitor resource use and manage costs.

The conversation also explores the Lemhi supercomputer, a large-scale computing resource managed in partnership with Idaho National Laboratory, Boise State University and Idaho State University. Sheneman highlights research projects supported by his team, including a AI tool for streamlining research administration and an AI-equipped enclosure that helps researchers study small mammals with less handling.

Throughout the conversation, Sheneman discusses both the potential and limitations of AI and how researchers can use these tools to expand scientific discovery, solve problems and reduce repetitive work.
