Nikki Florio, founder of Bee Heroic.

Bee Heroic (BH) is an adult focused pollinator and climate project. BH presents the issues and impacts surrounding pollinator losses and the current mass extinction event, and how they affect food and ecosystems.

Nikki shares that she will cover nearly all the topics and issues related to this that mainstream media fails to - due mostly to the fact that they are funded by agrochemical/pharma, and the telecom industries. Bee Heroic is headed into its seventh year.

Nikki Florio was raised in the central valley, and had been in Tahoe for 25 years prior to starting BH. After moving here as a young adult, she attended and graduated from LTCC and SNC (AA and BA/TED respectively), where she majored in natural sciences, humanities/environmental psychology/education).

Congratulations to Mišel Marovt, the 1st place winner for the first annual Preger Prize Creative Idea Challenge! 🎉

“My experience with Preger Prize Competition was great! I was rewarded for my hard work and I’m really happy our university supports students like this. Getting the prize really motivated me to always do my best, try to join more competitions, and turn this idea into a real project. A short explanation of my idea is to build a greenhouse next to my parents’ production plant in Slovenia and use the otherwise wasted heat from the factory to heat my greenhouse year-round. I think everyone can come up with at least one creative idea and I think everyone should participate. This competition is a great way to start thinking outside the box and win some money. I feel amazing! I’m really happy my hard work paid off and that judges believe in my idea as much as I do. I’m proud of myself and everyone who helped me perfect my idea. I just want to say thanks to prof. Leon Abravanel for pushing me to create a business plan in his class, and for encouraging me to enter the competition. I get really busy with two internships, schoolwork, and skiing practices so without his class, I would not have time to develop a business plan from my idea, so thank you Mr. A.” -Mišel Marovt 🦅🎉

Madeline Moore is a freshman here at SNU and is participating in the Preger Prize Creative Idea Challenge! 👏🏽 When asked about her experience so far:

“I wasn’t aware of this competition until my Professor, Brennan Legasse, brought it to my attention. I had presented my idea to him for his SUST 101 class and he thought I should enter it into the competition. I had also presented my idea to Jonathan Breiter in his ENTP 300 class which made entering into the competition a lot easier because I had most of the hard work done. At first when trying to come up with an idea I was really stressed and panicked. I wanted to come up with an idea that worked in the entrepreneurial aspect as well as the sustainable aspect of life. I have worked with kids as a camp counselor since I was 13 and used that as motivation for my idea. I really enjoyed working on this idea challenge and wish all the other contestants good luck.”

With the competition date nearing (November 18th), contestants are preparing to pitch their idea for our judges at a chance to win $5,000! Good luck to all of your contestants!

Everything is a business!

Leon Abravanel, Global Business Department Chair, shares his thoughts on businesses being everywhere:
“Look around you, what do you see? Regardless of what you see, everything you are experiencing and looking at is a business. The window you are looking out IS A BUSINESS. The carpet you are standing on IS A BUSINESS. The color in the carpet IS A BUSINESS. ‘Entrepreneurial Thinking’ is first about understanding that there are unlimited opportunities — the second task is to evaluate your passions — the third task is to understand how to evaluate each business opportunity — the final step is to mesh your passions with the viable opportunities.”

Let us know what you think on these incredible thoughts! Have a safe and fun weekend, Eagles! 🦅
