“… Everything changed for Izzy Sandoval when she enrolled in a sustainability certificate program at the Lake Tahoe campus.

During this experience, she was challenged with the task of figuring out a sustainable change that could be made to the campus. With a background in science laboratories, this challenged her in a new way, as the sustainability efforts were centered in both science and people.

“A lot of the class was about the people-side of sustainability. It’s really easy to focus on science, because science is undeniable, but understanding people, their needs, their economics and their culture, that’s the hard part,” she said.

During her time working on the sustainability certificate, she was able to connect with the professors, one being Brennan Lagasse ( ), an assistant professor at the Tahoe campus, who focused on creating informed experiences for students combining education with real-world applications.”

🌲Thank you to the Sugar Pine Foundation for partnering with the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe for a Community Engaged Learning weekend course this May.

University students spent the weekend planting trees with Maria Mircheva, Executive Director of the Sugar Pine Foundation. Students learned about blister rust, a non-native invasive disease impacting white pines across the Tahoe Basin. Just before the weekend rains, each student planted 10 Western White Pine saplings resistant to blister rust in an open area along the Fiberboard Freeway near Brockway Summit.

The experience brought together students from a wide range of majors, including Public Health, Anthropology, Kinesiology, Geography, Neuroscience and Hydrology, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and interdisciplinary connection.

A special thank you to Maria, and the Sugar Pine Foundation for sharing your time, expertise and commitment to restoration in the Tahoe Basin.

Is the Tahoe region in a snow drought? The answer is more nuanced than you might think...

Even when precipitation is close to average, warmer temperatures mean more of it falls as rain, or melts before it can accumulate. The result is a below-average snowpack with real consequences for water resources and recreation.

Adrian Harpold, Associate Professor of Mountain Ecohydrology at the Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability, explains the science behind snow droughts and why they’re intensifying in warmer, drier years.
