A great message shared from our colleagues in Liberty.

Once a Firefighter, Always a Firefighter. It’s not just a career — it’s who you are.

Even after retirement, that instinct never fades. You still turn your head when you hear sirens. You notice the glow of emergency lights before anyone else. You catch the faint smell of smoke in the air and your mind starts working through the possibilities.

That calling doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.

At the Liberty Fire Department, we recognize and honor those who came before us — the men and women who built this department, shaped our culture, and passed down the knowledge, experience, and traditions that guide us today.

Your impact is still felt on every call, in every decision, and in every firefighter who carries that legacy forward.

And just as you’ve always taken care of others, it’s important that we continue to take care of you. Mental health matters — even in retirement. The things seen and experienced over a career don’t simply fade with time. Staying connected, checking in on one another, and reaching out when needed is just as important now as it was on the job. Please remember, our Chaplain- Billy Combs and our Peer Support Members are there for you.

We are proud to follow in your footsteps.
We are grateful for your service.
And we will never forget the foundation you built.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Engineer (PM) Sean O'Bryant, who died off-duty on Monday, April 27th. Sean honorably served the Lenexa community since 2015. Funeral services have not yet been announced. We are focused on supporting Firefighter O’Bryant’s family and our department membership. Out of respect for the family and the Lenexa Fire Department, no other details are being released at this time. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

Today, we remember FF/Paramedic Graham Hoffman, who tragically lost his life one year ago.

Graham was known for his kindness, compassion, and dedication to serving others. Whether on a call or around the station, he led by example, bringing skill, humility, and heart to everything he did. He was the kind of person others looked up to, someone who pushed those around him to be better both on and off the job.

His impact continues to be felt, and his memory lives on in all who had the privilege to know and serve alongside him. We remember Graham today and always.

Always glad to help our industry partners.

This week IFD crews were able to take advantage of a great training opportunity, in the now vacant City Hall building. The training scenario started out as a normal response to an automatic alarm and ended up being a full response for a fire on the third floor with multiple victims throughout the building. All crews were able to participate in this very realistic training, and identify any areas of operation that worked well or needed improvement. A big thank you to MCC Blue River Fire Academy for their participation and for making this scenario as real as possible.
