CSPN Alumni Spotlight: A Career Built on Compassion: CSPN Alumna Andrea Russo
Andrea Russo’s journey into nursing began with a surprising classroom moment in high school. Struggling with undiagnosed learning challenges, she once doubted her own abilities until a “reverse classroom” assignment asked her to teach a section of biology.
The experience ignited her love of science and set her on a path toward healthcare. Inspired by a childhood hospital stay and encouraged by her mother, Andrea pursued nursing at CSPN over 50 years ago, laying the foundation for a remarkable career.
Specializing in Critical Care with a cardiac focus, Andrea began at University Hospitals during a transformative period in healthcare. She transitioned from a male patient ward to the Medical ICU and later as an RN spent 18 years in the Cardiac Monitoring Unit/Cardiac ICU before becoming a head nurse manager. Along the way, she witnessed cardiology advance rapidly and navigated evolving nursing roles with resilience and dedication.
Her proudest accomplishment is learning to believe in herself. Confidence, she explains, isn’t about knowing everything—it’s about trusting your ability to adapt, learn, and grow. Through challenges and opportunities, Andrea discovered that perseverance matters more than perfection, a lesson she encourages all future nurses to embrace.
Her advice for those considering nursing: “Do it—but understand that nursing is not just a job; it’s a lifelong career. Always ask yourself: Is this the best thing for the patient? That question will guide your decisions and keep you grounded. Nursing will challenge you, but it will also change you in ways you never imagined.”
Andrea Russo’s story is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and lifelong learning—a true inspiration for current and future CSPN nurses.
