IUP Anthropology Program

IUP Anthropology Program IUP Anthropology is part of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Department of Anthropology, Geospatial and Earth Sciences. degrees.

We offer undergraduate specializations in Applied Anthropology and Archaeology, and a master's degree in Applied Archaeology. Students who major in anthropology at IUP receive a solid grounding in all aspects of the discipline and are exposed to all subdisciplines in the field. While all our students receive a general degree in anthropology, they may choose to build expertise in a particular area

by pursuing specialized tracks. In addition to the general anthropology track, the department also offers tracks in applied anthropology and archaeology as well as Social Science Education. We have also recently added an Honors Program to provide advanced research training and experience for many of our majors. The Master of Arts in Applied Archaeology Program was initiated in 2009 and has thus far enrolled 47 students. The program is designed to meet industry and government needs for professional archaeologists in response to recent studies by the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) that found that there is a continuing and increasing need for archaeologists with applied M.A. Most of the program’s graduates are employed in the fields of cultural resource management (CRM), historic preservation, and heritage tourism. Our graduates work for engineering and environmental firms, private archaeological companies, and state and federal agencies.

Navajo Nation Service Learning Program Day 6 - We had breakfast at the Hogan Restaurant and then took a hike in stunning Coal Mine Canyon. We then visited Newspaper Rock where Ancestral Puebloan people etched petroglyphs to mark their clans for thousands of years. Afterwards, we traveled just down the road to Dinosaur Tracks. This is our last day on the Navajo Nation and the trip was incredible. We ended it with a fire and lots of laughter and reflection. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Navajo mentors, Vanessa Brown and Jade Lara, for sharing your stories and wisdom. Also, many thanks to Chaunupa Brown for feeding us amazing food. Ahéheeʼ!

Day 2 of the Navajo Nation Service Learning trip - We had an incredible day of service working in Hopi farm lands, preparing plots for irrigation from a collective system. In these matrilineal Hopi communities, fields and crops are owned by women. We learn about the importance of corn, the agroecology of the three sisters planting, and the ancient practice of nixtamalization. In the evening, we get a lesson in the Diné language from an elder who shares her history with us and teaches us a song. Ya’a’Te’eh!

Dr. Adams and Dr. Poole with the Navajo Nation Service Learning Program day one - We left Indiana at 2 am and arrived in Tuba City, Arizona to met our Navajo mentors. Students participated in a traditional sweat lodge with 4 rounds including asking for healing in the world. Then we learned about and recreated the Kinaalda ceremony when a Navajo girl receives her first me**es during which she becomes the sacred deity Changing Woman.
