ICIC is proud to have been represented at the 2024 TESOL International Convention in Tampa last month! On March 22, Assistant Director, Matthew Hume, presented on a panel alongside participants from the 2023 Department of State sponsored Service-Learning Exchange Program hosted by IUPUI–Ayna Aliyeva, Olivia Mondal, and Michael Recard Sihombing–and Jamila Barton, Global Program Officer for the U.S. Department of State’s Online Professional English Network (OPEN). The panel, “Engaging Communities, Empowering Learners: Service-Learning for Transformative Change,” explored how service-learning empowers individuals to effect positive social change, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. We are looking forward to continuing our exploration of the powers of service-learning and to continue building upon the valuable relationships that were formed during the 2023 Service-Learning Exchange Program.

On October 5th–7th, ICIC hosted the 9th Intercultural Rhetoric and Discourse Conference in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Speakers from 13 different countries across five continents convened to share their research, experiences, and insights. Conference presenters and attendees shared ideas and collaborated on crucial topics such as immigration, nationalism, literacy, intercultural knowledge, and more. From thought-provoking panels to engaging discussions, the exchange of ideas was nothing short of remarkable. We sincerely thank all our distinguished guests, dedicated organizers, and our brilliant students, faculty, and staff at IUPUI for making this event possible. Let's continue to build bridges, foster understanding, and work together towards a more compassionate and informed world!

For two weeks in March, ICIC hosted an international service-learning exchange sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by FHI 360. This program, which brought 25 TESOL educators from 24 different countries to IUPUI’s campus, was recently featured in an article on the IU School of Liberal Arts’ news page, and the story is gaining significant community recognition. The article explores various aspects of the program, includes a quote from Ulla Connor, Academic Director of the exchange, and specifically highlights the experiences of Kateryna Filatova, a program participant from Ukraine. Check out the article below!

Earlier this spring, English as a Foreign Language teachers from 24 countries traveled to Indianapolis to learn about service-learning techniques to incorporate into their craft, thanks to the School of Liberal Arts International Center for Intercultural Communication: https://bit.ly/3CvPVUa

Celebrating 50 years of academic excellence! Ulla and John Connor were recently honored at the University of Wisconsin - Madison for having earned their doctorates 50 years ago. Ulla earned her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the School of Education in 1978 and John earned his PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in 1976. It was a proud moment as they were hooded by the current Chairs of their respective schools and participated in the Commencement Ceremony on May 12, 2023. Only six others were recognized, making this an incredible honor indeed. The event is featured in the following University of Wisconsin - Madison story: https://news.wisc.edu/unfinished-business-group-of-phd-students-will-walk-in-commencement-50-years-after-earning-degrees/ 🎓🎉

The 2023 Service-Learning Exchange sponsored by FHI 360 and the U.S. Department of State has officially come to an end, but an enduring spirit of connection remains. Truly an exchange experience, our integrated program of academic workshops, site visits, and cultural activities allowed us to share the best of ICIC’s and IUPUI’s service-learning expertise and strong faculty knowledge, along with aspects of local and national culture, while our international colleagues opened our eyes to cultures, traditions, and teaching experiences that span the globe.

During these two weeks of shared experiences, our participating exchange scholars, each strong and dedicated teachers on their own, coalesced into a supportive family of educators, into a strong community of practice, that ICIC is honored to know. It was incredible to work with such talented TESOL educators, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
