Classics at Butler University

Classics at Butler University The Department of Classical Studies at Butler University We enter into dialogue with minds of the past in order to understand ourselves better now.

The culture, history and literature of Ancient Greece and Rome have long captivated the imagination of people throughout history and across the globe, from the Renaissance to the Founding Fathers of America to modern writers from the Caribbean. We continue to live in a world of classical roots, whether it be the Athenian roots of democracy or the Roman origins of our Republic, the Greek love for t

he beauty of athletics, or an enthusiasm for theater that moved from Greece to Rome to Shakespeare and beyond. The Greeks and the Romans helped articulate the liberal arts that are at the heart of a Butler education. As we engage with the thinking and the art of the ancients, we aim to develop an understanding, enjoyment and critical appreciation of some abiding principles of our world. Studying the Greeks and Romans, we become part of our larger family over time. We enrich our minds and our imaginations, and we sharpen our skills for work and life today.

One great thing about staying at the Villa Vergiliana is remembering the experiences of past groups we've taken to Rome.

Our first Classics Spotlight of the 2020 year is now live!

The blog highlights Dr. Allannah Karas of Valparaiso University, who was able to borrow and integrate a handful of artifacts and replicas from our collection into her classroom discussions.

“I’m a firm believer that students best understand the ancient world through direct engagement with the material remains and physical culture of that world."

To read Dr. Karas' full story follow the link to the AMCA Blog!

We were so excited to be able to send our materials all the way to Valparaiso University, and would love the opportunity to reach even more classrooms and individuals, both here at Butler and beyond.

We are excited to introduce our next Butler Classics Spotlight on Mark Kimpel, a former physician and current graduate non-degree seeking student here at Butler interested in Classics, Philosophy, and Theology.
