Do you have a friend or family member who has questions or concerns about vaccines? Maybe they’ve heard conflicting information, aren’t sure what to believe, or simply want the opportunity to ask questions without feeling judged.

We’re hosting a community conversation designed to provide a welcoming, respectful space to talk openly about vaccines. Attendees will have the opportunity to bring their questions and concerns, discuss the science behind vaccination with members of the medical community, and receive evidence-based information to help them make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

This is not a lecture or attempt to pressure anyone into a decision. Questions, concerns, and different perspectives are welcome.

Attn. medical students and faculty:

We need your help reaching beyond the medical community. If someone in your family, friend group, or community has questions about vaccines—or simply wants to better understand the evidence—please invite them to join us and share this event with them.

DONUTS will be provided! There will also be chances to win gift cards to local restaurants in Indy and Amazon with survey participation!

Thank you to our first- and second-year osteopathic medical students for making Monday’s MU‑WCOM Student Activities Fair at the Evans Center a success! With 43 student groups on hand, it was a fantastic start to the new school year—full of student-led opportunities to make a real difference in the community across specialty areas and personal interests. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish this year!

🚧 Attention MU-WCOM Students 🚧
As you know, parking will be more limited this academic year due to construction of the new Center for Human Flourishing.

🅿️ The returning undergrads and graduate students from other programs will be joining us on campus for the beginning of their fall semester August 24th. As of Friday, August 21st, please plan to arrive early as commuter parking lots will fill quickly during peak morning hours.

📍 Be sure to review the campus parking map and look for the highlighted commuter parking lots and designated overflow parking areas, including the Cycloplex shuttle lot, which will play an important role in helping accommodate parking demand this year.

🚌 If the lots closest to campus are full, the Cycloplex shuttle provides a convenient option to get you where you need to go. The shuttle schedule is Monday-Friday, from 7:15 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

✅ Review the map before your first day back. ✅ Know your commuter parking options. ✅ Give yourself extra time to park and get to class.

Plan ahead, park smart, and have a great semester! 💙💛

Last week, we celebrated the MU‑WCOM DO Class of 2030 during their orientation with a White Coat Recognition Ceremony at Alumni Hall. Each student took the stage to announce their names and to be coated by their faculty advisers. Dr. David Blank, the Indiana Osteopathic Association President, then led them in the Osteopathic Oath.

Our newest osteopathic medical students finished their week fully prepared to begin classes Monday, and are now on campus alongside our returning OMS‑2s.

Congratulations, Class of 2030—welcome to the MU‑WCOM family and congratulations on taking this first step toward becoming Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine!

We’re celebrating another incredible MU‑WCOM D.O. Day of Service! For the fifth year, Home Repairs for Good partnered with Marian University’s Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine to welcome the incoming Class of 2030 for a day of hands‑on community care.

168 medical students joined staff, volunteers, and faculty on July 29 to help older adults and people with disabilities stay safe and independent at home. Volunteers served 11 homeowners (including three veterans) and the Aspire House community center in Indianapolis’ Near Northwest neighborhood—completing landscaping and exterior repairs that improve safety, accessibility, and quality of life.

What an inspiring day! Last Sunday, Marian University welcomed the DO Class of 2028 to their White Coat Ceremony. Congratulations on reaching this milestone—best of luck as you move into clinicals! Congratulations to the DeSmet Lab on publishing "Targeted Protein Degradation Strategies in DNA Virus Research" in Viruses, a peer-reviewed open-access journal of virology, published online monthly by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.

In the article, they explored a technology called PROTACs, which act like molecular disposal tags. Viruses depend on proteins, both their own and those inside cells, to reproduce and remain in the body. PROTACs direct specific proteins to the cell’s natural protein-degradation system so they can be broken down.

They review how scientists can use this technology to better understand how DNA viruses, including human papillomaviruses and herpesviruses, cause infection and persist in the body. We also suggest new viral proteins that could be studied or targeted using PROTACs.

This approach may eventually contribute to new antiviral treatments that selectively remove proteins viruses need to survive.

Congratulations to MU-WCOM professor Samina Akbar, Ph.D., on the publishing of her recent work “Revised microbiology core knowledge objectives for modern undergraduate medical education,” in the American Society for Microbiology's Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education, which defines updated core learning objectives for medical microbiology in response to the changing structure of preclinical training.

The work provides educators with a flexible, clinically grounded framework to strengthen curriculum design, support student learning, and clarify the foundational microbiology knowledge future physicians need for practice. The article was published in collaboration with faculty from multiple allopathic and osteopathic medical schools.
