Alarming stats: 300,000+ Hoosiers lack mental health care. 54% of Indiana youth with depression go untreated. All 92 Indiana counties face mental health care workforce shortages.

We're tackling this crisis head-on with our new Lilly Endowment-funded Playbook for Enhancing Indiana's Mental and Behavioral Health Workforce.

Key strategies:

- Secure the Pipeline: Address 'training deserts' in underserved Indiana counties
- Strengthen Clinical Training: 24% of professionals cite clinical supervision issues
- Align Education & Practice: 58% struggle with licensing process
- Assess School-Based Services: Enhance support for youth mental health through improved data collection

A father's health and presence are crucial factors in the health of their children. The Bowen Center is proud to be partnering with Dr. Funches, Assistant Professor at IU School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and neonatologist at Riley Hospital for Children, in the Indy Fathers’ Health Study.

The goal of this study is to understand the opinions of fathers regarding their personal health and how it contributes to the health of their families.

In 2012, about half of Indiana's counties were
designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas. As of 2023, all 92
of Indiana's counties were designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas. Over 1.1 million Hoosier adults have a diagnosed mental health condition.

Without a skilled workforce available to those in need of care, many suffering from untreated mental illness will lack options for care. Its consequences are far-reaching, and its impact on both the economy and Hoosiers is staggering.

This is why we are excited to be teaming up with collaborators across the state, supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., for a new
project to better understand and help address the shortage of licensed
mental and behavioral health professionals in Indiana.
