IUPUI American Indian Programs SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

POKAGON BAND OF POTAWATOMI PARTNERS WITH SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS FOR MASS VACCINATION OF NATIVE AMERICANS AND OTHER NATIVE GROUPS LIVING IN INDIANA

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi is pleased to announce that it has partnered with several Indiana-based organizations to offer COVID-19 vaccines to Native Americans including state-recognized and historical tribes, as well as Native Hawaiians, Native Alaskans, and other native groups living in Indiana. Vaccines will be distributed by appointment only on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning on Saturday, March 27 and the second dose in the two-shot series will be delivered on Saturday, April 24. Interested Native Citizens can schedule an appointment beginning on Monday, March 22 by calling the American Indian Center of Indiana at (317) 917-8000 or by sending an email to [email protected]. Vaccinations will take place at 1145 East 22nd Street in Indianapolis. In order to qualify, interested individuals must be 18 years of age or older. An appointment is required as a limited number of doses are available. Vaccine doses will be administered by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi’s Pokagon Health Services (PHS) staff led by Dr. Gerald Morris.

Tatanka Means addresses IUPUI as the final speaker of the Fall 2020 Diversity Lecture Series on Thursday, November 12th at 6:00 pm. Born in Chinle, Arizona, Tatanka Means represents the Navaho, Oglala Lakota and Omaha Nations. An actor, comedian, motivational speaker and activist, his extensive acting credits include Saints and Strangers (National Geographic Channel), The Son with Pierce Brosnan (AMC), A Million Ways to Die in the West with Seth MacFarlane, BANSHEE (Cinemax), Graves (EPIX) with Nick Nolte, The Night Shift (NBC) and Steven Spielberg’s TNT mini-series Into the West in which he appeared as Lakota Chief Crazy Horse.
Son of the influential member of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s Russell Means, Tatanka follows in his father’s footsteps as an advocate for equality and advancement for Native Americans.
In addition to acting Tatanka Means performs stand-up comedy throughout the U.S. and Canada making him one of the busiest touring Native American comedians performing today. He travels Indian Country spreading laughter and messages of motivation to all ages, entertaining audiences everywhere from casinos and schools, conferences and colleges to prisons and rehab centers. He was recognized and awarded for his comedy by being voted Best Comedian by Albuquerque The Magazine. Means developed and launched his own screen printing and clothing company, Tatanka Clothing. Apparel designed and created to uplift and inspire cultural empowerment. The National Indian Gaming Association recently recognized Tatanka Means with the 2018 Entertainer of the Year.
