Africana Studies (formerly known as the African American and African Diaspora Studies Program) was first established at IUPUI in 1981 by Dr. Monroe Little. In his capacity as the Founding Director, he emphasized the importance of establishing an institution and courses that would emphasize the important history and culture of the peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora. "At the same time, he em

phasized the importance of creating Black Studies Programs that chronicle the life experiences and historical trajectories of African Americans all the way from ancient Africa to the building of modern American society.
