WVSU Student Veterans of America

WVSU Student Veterans of America Welcome to the West Virginia State University chapter of Student Veterans of America!

We are a local branch of the Student Veterans of America whose mission is "To provide military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and following graduation." SVA’s mission is to provide military veterans with the resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and after graduation. The organization was born from the experie

nces of young veterans transitioning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to college campuses across the nation. What they encountered were unprepared school environments void of peers with shared experiences. Not only are student veterans typically older than “traditional” students, but they have radically different life experiences. Quite simply, student
veterans often felt like outsiders on campus, which exacerbated the challenges of transitioning to life as a civilian and as a student. SVA’s objectives:
• Connect members with on-campus resources needed for college success.
• Support members as they transition from the military to civilian life.
• Generate awareness of veterans on campus.
• Create and promote camaraderie.
• Serve as a voice for student service members and veterans on campus. Constitution:

Today, we pause in remembrance of September 11. We honor the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the resilience shown by our nation.

For freshmen and sophomore STEM majors.

Today is the deadline for Research Rookies applications. However, we have not filled all positions yet, so we are extending the deadline until we have as many Research Rookies as we can accommodate.

What we are looking for are freshmen and sophomores to do research with faculty. You don't need research experience, and you don't need to have a faculty member in mind, but neither would hurt.

Research Rookies complete 10 hours of research per week in September, October, and November (not during fall break).

They also meet once per month for professional development.

At the end of the year, they will present research at the research symposium. The entire academic year is meant to prepare you for this.

Research Rookies get $2,000 per semester ($4,000 per year).

Here are the qualifications:
US citizen or permanent resident
Maintain full-time enrollment
STEM Major
Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
Demonstrate intent in pursuing research experiences and/or post-graduate studies in the STEM field
