Iowa native and a Hawkeye, conductor James Dixon (1928–2007) was instrumental in building orchestras at the University of Iowa, in the Midwest, and abroad, including the Quad City Symphony Orchestra!

In celebration of Dixon’s tenure heading the QCSO (1965-1994) and the current exhibition Orchestrating Community: The Public Service of Iowa Conductor James Dixon, on display in the University of Iowa Main Library Gallery, the university and QCSO held a virtual panel discussion Thursday, April 2 on what makes great orchestra programs and the towering legacy of Dixon.

Read more about Dixon at the article below and go visit the current exhibition on Dixon at the Iowa Main Library to get a deeper look at look at Dixon’s adventurous international career. The exhibit is open through Friday, June 26.

“If we refuse to listen to new works and please remember, every work is new to its initial listeners, then music will die. It would have died long ago if everyone refused to give new works a chance.” James Dixon

James Dixon (1928-2007) was the longest-serving conductor in QCSO history – leading the ensemble 29 years — and is the subject of a new exhibit at the University of Iowa.
