On this day in 2002, former Congressman Jim Leach visited University of Iowa Health Care and toured our cytology and microbiology labs as a follow-up to the Political Advocacy Training sponsored by the College of American Pathologists.

Former Co-Chief Resident and current Chief Medical Examiner of North Carolina, Michelle Aurelius, MD, organized the tour where they reviewed slides relevant to several bills Leach sponsored that were awaiting the President's signature at the time.

This past January, we lost our dear friend and beloved team member, Amber Martin. Amber was our MLS Supervisor in the microbiology lab and working on her Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science Leadership with an Advanced Concentration in Micro/Molecular Diagnostics through the University of Cincinnati.

For everyone that knew Amber, you knew that if she was learning about a subject, she couldn't just learn part of it- she wanted to learn all of it. In Amber's honor and her passion for education, we have established the Amber Martin Laboratory Science Fund with University of Iowa Alumni to provide scholarship support for the Medical Laboratory Science program and/or programmatic support for laboratory students, faculty, and staff for future lab scientists.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. With melanoma diagnoses on the rise, and it being the most serious form of skin cancer, we wanted to go over some brief information on melanoma and common symptoms.

Melanoma typically starts on areas of the skin often expose to UV rays, such as the face, arms, legs, and back, but can also form in other areas such as the eye and nail bed. The first symptoms often include a change in an existing mole, the development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on the skin, changes in color and/or size, unusual border, asymmetrical shape, and change in sensation around the mole or spot including bleeding or itchiness.

If you notice any of these changes, schedule an appointment with your provider. Early intervention matters.

A great week at ColLABorate in with our team! Hosted by the Iowa chapter of ASCP and American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Iowa (ASCLS-IA) in Cedar Rapids, we were lucky enough to have several of our faculty and staff featured in presentations on topics such innovations in blood cultures and growing medical laboratory science as a career.

Two of our University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center staff members brought home awards as well. Barb Smith was awarded the ASCLS Outstanding Support Staff Award for her dedication and service to DeGowin and her vital role in ensuring operations run smoothly. ShaLynn Parks received the Mentor of the Year Award for her leadership and ability to mentor and guide her colleagues in phlebotomy.

Congratulations to Aracely Miron-Ocampo for successfully defending her thesis, "Profiling the Nasal Microbiome in People with Multiple Sclerosis" and completing the Pathology Masters of Science program!

Her thesis work was performed in Ashutosh Mangalam, PhD's research laboratory where she identified that people with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) had a distinct nasal microbiome.
