Congratulations to Dr. Neiman! She has mentored many students for ISA and we appreciate her expertise and dedication to helping young scientists advance in their careers.

University of Iowa Department of Biology Professor Maurine Neiman has been recognized with the 2025 IDEA Award by the American Society of Naturalists for her leadership in broadening participation and opportunity across the evolutionary biology community worldwide. From mentoring early-career scientists to advancing more open publishing practices, her impact extends far beyond the lab.

Dr. Neiman will present her work at the Evolution 2026 meeting this May.

Applications for the Biology Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards are currently being accepted! Three of the awards are open to any student majoring in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or Neuroscience while the fourth is open to any student conducting research within the Department of Biology. Students can self-nominate or be nominated by others.

The deadline for all awards is April 1st. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

On March 7th, members of the Science in Action club (Adviser: Brandon Waltz, Assistant Professor of Instruction) participated in an outreach event at the Regional Awards Celebration for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program.

The members managed an informational booth introducing middle schoolers and their parents to the world of tardigrades and showcased some examples of faculty and student writing in the form of children's/youth science-themed books (many provided by the Iowa Sciences Academy/Latham Program).
