Deborah Svec-Carstens (98JD) will release her debut memoir, Toward the Light: A Year in Paris, on Sept. 15. The book delves into a life-changing year spent in Paris in her early 20s and her journey toward healing, community, and connection.

After nearly 20 years in law, including clerking for the Hon. Robert E. Mahan at the Iowa Court of Appeals and then-Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Louis A. Lavorato at the Iowa Supreme Court, and then serving as general counsel for the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, Svec-Carstens now works as a writer, spiritual director, and book coach.
