Irvine Lodge has a long lineage of first responders in our membership and boasts the 8th most First Responders of any lodge in the State. Our first responders want to pass along some information to keep you safe during the upcoming winter storm that has the potential to be one for the memory books.

As the temperatures drop, keeping your family warm is the priority, but safety comes first.

Here are the crucial rules to follow during the storm to prevent fires and injuries:

Space Heater Safety:
•The 3-Foot Rule: Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable (curtains, blankets, furniture).
•Plug Directly In: Never use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater; plug it directly into the wall outlet.
•Shut It Down: Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Generators:
•OUTSIDE ONLY: Never run a generator inside your home, garage, or basement. Distance Matters! Keep it at least 20 feet away from windows and doors to prevent Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.
•Don't back feed: Make sure your generator is not feeding power back into the electric grid. Pole transformers work both directions, increasing your generator to power line voltage. This is extremely hazardous to utility workers and is ILLEGAL in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Lighting:
•Flashlights First: Use battery-operated lanterns or flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk.
•Never Leave Unattended: If you must use candles or lanterns never leave them burning in an empty room.

Check Your Alarms:
•Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries!

Don't Travel:
Ensure you have enough resources to stay put during the storm.

Stay warm and look out for your neighbors!
