This week, we're going to be collaborating with Prism for a poetry reading out at Aldrich Park. It'll be a welcoming environment; as long as you have an appreciation for the form, come as you are! We're going to be embracing and diving into poetry written by LGBT creators from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Tuesday, May 6th right in Aldrich Park, so do stop by!

Have a specific piece in mind that you want the group to go over? Consider submitting it through the QR code on the second slide!

It's finally time for our annual book swap party, our way of wrapping up the fall quarter. We'll have snacks and a whole lotta books to exchange. Remember to bring your wrapped-up books to Humanities Hall 118 on December 2nd, 2024 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm so that you can exchange them for some new-to-you books.

Hey, English endorsers! Ready for a new event?

We're introducing (drum roll please) "This Academic Life", a new series of conversations in which English Department faculty reveal the formative influences and experiences that inspired their scholarly and creative work. What got them interested in their work? How did they get to where they are in their work today? We delve into all this during this new event.

For our debut, we've got Professor Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan, or Professor Radha for short, a professor whose research includes postcolonialism and critical theory, among many other topics.

We're hosting this event during our general meeting time, so come stop by Humanities Hall 118 on Monday, November 18th, 2024 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. It's going to be a fun time!

Hey, English exemplars! 

Join us on Thursday, November 7th, 2024 for a night of rhymes and free verse, lyric and slam poetry, from sonnets centuries old to your favorite contemporary poets! Join UCI faculty and your fellow peers to explore how poets harness the material qualities of language to generate meaning through sound. 

No advanced preparation is required. When you come stop by Humanities Gateway 1010 from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, the only thing you'll need is a desire to explore the music of language. We'll provide the copies of the poems as well some refreshments. All are welcome, so bring your friends!

We'll ease back into the flow of things by talking about YA novels. From Harry Potter to The Hunger Games, there's a whole plethora of novels out there for teens and young adults to love and appreciate. But where did these novels come from? How did we get to the YA novels of today?

EMA wants to recognize all the headaches and balls of paper forming this week, so we're going to be hosting a social at Cha for Tea to help alleviate some of that stress. Meet up with your fellow Eng-gang (and cry together) over a nice cup of tea on Monday, October 28th, 2024. We'll be there from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at UTC.

This is also going to be a fundraiser, so don't forget to show the second slide! Be seeing you there, and good luck on your midterms! 🫡
