Algae-Wastewater Postdoctoral Research Associate Position at UIUC

Guest Research Group, Jeremy Guest (PI)
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)

Deadline: Application review will begin November 11, 2020
Start Dates: Flexible, preferred between January 1, 2021 and March 31, 2021
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the research group of Associate Professor Jeremy Guest. We are seeking a qualified and motivated postdoctoral researcher to advance the design and control of intensive algal wastewater treatment systems for nutrient recovery and bioenergy feedstock production. This project has been funded by a $2M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and will include collaboration with Prof. Ameet Pinto (Northeastern Univ.), Prof. Ian Bradley (Univ. at Buffalo), Clearas Water Recovery (https://www.clearaswater.com/), and the Village of Roberts (Wisconsin). Full project details are here:https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2020/07/f77/2203-1608_University_of_Illinois_at_Urbana-Champaign_Topic_2_Waste_t_Summary.pdf

The successful applicant will lead the characterization and modeling of the first full-scale Advanced Biological Nutrient Recovery (ABNRTM) installation. Additionally, the postdoctoral research associate will collaborate with other researchers at UIUC to develop an open-source, mechanistic process simulator to predict effluent nutrient concentrations and process sustainability, integrating process modeling with techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) under uncertainty. The postdoc will be in Dr. Guest’s research group and will collaborate with other researchers in his group and the project team.

The duties of the postdoc will focus on water quality (N and P species, COD, alkalinity, etc.) and biomass characterization (carbohydrate/protein/lipid content, fatty acid profiles, etc.), process modeling, TEA, and LCA. The majority of this work will be conducted at UIUC (Urbana, Illinois), but will include leading multiple (approx. four) 1-month sampling campaigns at the ABNR site (Village of Roberts, Wisconsin; ~30 minutes from Minneapolis) spread across a calendar year. Sampling and monitoring of the field site will be automated as much as possible and will also be supported by Clearas Water Recovery staff and other researchers from the project team. Thus, it may not be required for the postdoc to be on-site at the ABNR facility for the full time each campaign. Prof. Guest will work with the postdoc to accommodate scheduling needs (including limiting time away from UIUC) as much as is possible by hiring other personnel to collect samples, adding additional automation, etc.

Expertise in some of the following areas is desired: bioprocess experimentation (especially with algae or cyanobacteria), biomass compositional analysis, water quality analyses, wastewater process modeling, TEA, LCA, or programming in Python.

Required qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or other relevant field;
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
Strong candidates will also possess the following attributes:
• Experience with wastewater and bioprocess experimentation;
• Experience in process engineering and process modeling;
• Evidence of scientific impact of their Ph.D. (e.g., published papers).

Postdoc application review will begin on November 11, 2020. Prospective postdocs should email the following materials to Prof. Guest with the subject line “DOE SWIM Postdoc”: brief cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three references, and up to two examples of scholarly output (e.g., published or submitted manuscripts). Preferred start dates are between January 1 and March 31, 2021, but later start dates may also be possible. The position is available for multiple years; however, annual renewal is dependent on funding, progress made by the individual, and career goals of the individual (mentoring plans will be tailored to meet the individual’s goals). All positions include competitive salary and benefits. Any offer for postdoc positions are contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check (http://humanresources.illinois.edu/).

More information may be found on relevant websites for the Guest Research Group (http://engineeringforsustainability.com/) and the Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering (http://cee.illinois.edu/), or by contacting Prof. Guest ([email protected]). Illinois is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas who embrace and value diversity and inclusivity.
