Stress Relieving Tip of the Week: Enjoy the Sunshine!

When good weather arrives, it's time to head outside. Research shows the profound effect that fresh air, plants, trees and natural outdoor elements have on our health and well-being. When you spend time outdoors, especially being active, you can lift your mood, think more positively, feel more internal calm and greater harmony with the world around you.

It’s the first nice day in more than a week. After days and days of rain, people on the street seem to be less stressed — smiling more, interacting more, and making eye contact. What is it about being outdoors—especially on a nice day?

Sylvia Plath is one of the most noted poets of the 20th century. Here's a look back at her story.

"While in New York, Plath would experience her first breakdown and hospitalization, which lead to a diagnosis of depression and the call for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as therapy." It's important to recognize, however, that "while therapy did not ultimately save Plath’s life, many people who experience mental illnesses receive treatment and go on to have successful, balanced lives."

Sylvia Plath didn’t reach her pinnacle of fame until after her untimely death in 1963, but her posthumous catalogue of poetry solidifies her as a legend and poetic genius.

Stress Relieving Tip of the Week: EXERCISE!

Happy Week 1 Everyone! Granted week 1 may be accompanied by the least amount of stress in a UC student's life, it's still a great time to develop a routine. Establishing a habit now may make it easier to keep your engine running as the quarter progresses. Below is an excerpt from the APA (American Psychological Association) on the overall relation between exercise and stress:

"Biologically, exercise seems to give the body a chance to practice dealing with stress. It forces the body's physiological systems - all of which are involved in the stress response - to communicate much more closely than usual: The cardiovascular system communicates with the renal system, which communicates with the muscular system. And all of these are controlled by the central and sympathetic nervous systems, which also must communicate with each other. This workout of the body's communication system may be the true value of exercise; the more sedentary we get, the less efficient our bodies in responding to stress."

Exercise may lower rates of anxiety and depression by helping the brain cope better with stress.

"I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don’t have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it."

With the exception of "Rock of Ages," Catherine Zeta-Jones has stayed out of the limelight recently. The 43-year-old Welsh actress, who once sizzled as Hollywood's it-girl in films like "America's Sweethearts" and "Chicago," gave a refreshingly candid interview with InStyle magazine for its December...

Stress Relieving Tip of the Week: EAT WELL

Hectic college schedules make healthy eating difficult for many college students. Do you eat nothing but cheap, greasy foods at odd hours of the day and night in and around UCI?

Reduce your stress levels by eating simple and healthy meals at appropriate intervals throughout the day:

* Eat smaller portions through the course of the day to keep your metabolism going!
* Eat breakfast! This will keep your body running from the get-go!

Have a healthy Spring Break everybody!
