After 20 years of building the University of Dallas library collection, Debbie Hathaway is retiring and heading to Alaska.

As head of acquisitions and technical services, Debbie has spent two decades making sure every book, database and resource our students and faculty needed was right where they looked for it. She secured two major grants to build the Core Collection, served four terms on the University Council and got to know nearly every faculty member, student worker and book that passed through her doors.

“The University of Dallas is unique at its core. What other university can you walk down the Mall and hear students saying, 'Oh, did you read that paragraph in Plato's Republic? What did you think of that?' It is totally amazing," Hathaway said.

Her advice to students? "Never stop learning. There is always something that should spark in your mind. You should always have that curiosity and a sense of fun and imagination and love of learning."

UDallas alumnus Dr. Matthew Mehan, BA ’00, MA ’10, PhD ’14, is featured in The American Mind for his latest work, The American Book of Fables, a richly imagined collection that brings together story, moral imagination and American history.

A proud graduate of both UD’s undergraduate program and the Institute of Philosophic Studies, Dr. Mehan has described the University of Dallas as “the finest continuation of the Catholic tradition of university education in the West.”

We are proud to see our alumni carrying forward the work of cultivating wisdom, imagination and love for the permanent things.

Those were the words of His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop Emeritus of New York, yesterday, before delivering the commencement address to the University of Dallas Class of 2026 at the Toyota Music Factory.

University of Dallas alumnus Daniel Fitzpatrick, currently a student in UD’s Classical Education Graduate Program, recently published an essay in Crisis Magazine titled “Out, Out!—Violence, Obscenity, and the Recovery of Language.”

In the piece, Fitzpatrick reflects on the moral and cultural importance of language, arguing that the recovery of words is closely tied to the recovery of virtue, imagination and Christian culture. His essay also points to the enduring value of the Trivium grammar, logic and rhetoric at the heart of classical education.

We are proud to see UD alumni and students contributing thoughtfully to important conversations about language, formation and the renewal of culture.
